What is sedation dentistry?
Medication that reduces anxiety and awareness during dental treatment, given either through a drip (IV) or as a tablet (oral).
With sedation you remain conscious and able to breathe on your own, which is what separates it from a general anaesthetic given in hospital. IV sedation produces a deeper, more controllable state and is adjusted during the appointment; oral sedation is lighter and simpler. Both are provided for eligible patients after a consultation and medical history, and both appointments are pre-booked rather than same-day.

Who is sedation for?
Sedation may be considered if you experience dental anxiety, have a strong gag reflex, find it hard to sit for long appointments, or have avoided the dentist for years and need several treatments done at once.
Suitability depends on your general health and medical history. Some conditions and medications affect whether sedation is appropriate or which type is used, so a medical history is taken at the consultation before any sedation appointment is booked. Sedation is not a substitute for a general anaesthetic where one is clinically required, and your dentist will tell you if that is the case.

Treatments commonly done under sedation
Sedation is used most often for longer or surgical appointments, and for anything at all when anxiety is the barrier to care.
At Barrett Street Dental, sedation is commonly provided for dental implant placement, All-on-X full-arch treatment and wisdom teeth removal, where a single longer appointment under IV sedation can replace several shorter visits. It is also available for fillings, extractions, root canal treatment and check-ups and cleans for patients who have put off care for a long time.
Dental implants at Barrett Street Dental are placed by Dr Vikram Bansal, and IV sedation is offered for eligible implant patients.
Sedation costs and health funds
Sedation is quoted separately from the dental treatment, and you receive an itemised written estimate after your consultation.
The cost depends on whether IV or oral sedation is used and how long the appointment is. Your estimate lists the item numbers for both the sedation and the treatment, which you can give to your health fund to check what your extras cover pays. Barrett Street Dental is a Bupa Members First Platinum and Medibank Members’ Choice provider, and with HICAPS at the practice any applicable rebate is claimed on the spot.
